How do I use the DigiSnap with a Mac?
This article describes how to configure the advanced features in a DigiSnap 2000 series controller with Mac OS X. Configuring with Windows and Linux is also supported.
What you'll need:
- Mac running OS X
- DigiSnap 2000 series controller (most common are DigiSnap 2100 and 2700)
- power for the DigiSnap (usually provided by a Time-Lapse Package or AAA battery)
- a USB-serial converter cable
- null-modem cable or a USB-serial cable with built-in null-modem feature
- DigiSnap Terminal.app
- Driver software for your USB-serial cable
The USB-to-serial converter cable we sell is based on the FTDI chipset. These instructions assume you are using this cable. Other cables from manufacturers like Prolific and Keyspan will work, but you must follow the driver installation instructions that come with those cables. If your computer is not detecting the USB-to-serial cable, you are likely missing the required driver software. We recommend the FTDI cable because it is reliable and easy to get working.
DigiSnap Programming Instructions for Mac OS X
- Install the USB-serial cable drivers for your cable:
- If you bought a Harbortronics USB-serial cable, install this driver from FTDI:
- Mac OS X 10.3 to 10.8
- Mac OS X 10.9 and 10.10
- or Mac OS X 10.11 and above: Apple's built-in driver is sufficient and no installation is necessary.
If you accidentally installed the FTDI driver on OS X 10.11 or newer, here is a procedure to remove it.- For third-party cables, install the driver that came with the cable or search the cable manufacturer's website for the appropriate driver.
- Connect one end of null-modem cable to the DigiSnap and the other end to the USB-serial cable
- Insert the USB serial cable into the USB port on your Mac
- Launch DigiSnap Terminal.app
- Power on your DigiSnap (as indicated by the on-screen instructions in DigiSnap Terminal.app)
- A menu will print to the screen. Type the commands as indicated to program the DigiSnap.
- When done, Type Q and hit return to save changes to the DigiSnap
- Close DigisnapTerminal.app and disconnect the cables
